Who We Are
The New Jersey Apartment Association ("NJAA") is a 501(c) (6) non profit trade association representing owners, developers and managers of rental housing throughout the State of New Jersey as well as hundreds of suppliers to the multi-family housing industry. The organization was incorporated in 1977 as the Multi-Housing Industry, an affiliate of the New Jersey Builders Association, and in 1986 separated from the Builders to become what is known today as the New Jersey Apartment Association.
Our Rich History
The New Jersey Apartment Association (NJAA) commemorated its 25th Anniversary in 2011 by launching a historical timeline depicting key moments beginning with its split from the Builders Association in 1986 and extending to its recent participation in developing a national bed bug remediation strategy.
Along the way the Association has enjoyed numerous accomplishments and expansion, growing to represent the owners of more than 190,000 apartment homes, which has enabled concomitant growth of the multi-family industry’s presence at the State House on behalf of its membership. Whether the issues were legislative, legal, regulatory or policy related, the NJAA has engaged across the spectrum and made a real difference for our members on issues like security deposit laws, rent control, solid waste re-imbursements, energy efficiency and utility sub-metering, economic development, Smart Growth and land use decision making, reducing government ‘red tape,’ tax policy, and Fair Housing compliance.
The goals and objectives of the New Jersey Apartment Association are designed to advance and protect the welfare of the apartment industry in New Jersey.
NJAA represents the apartment industry before the New Jersey Legislature and governmental agencies and provides continuing education and information to its members and the public.
NJAA is committed to providing services and opportunities that enhance, improve and promote the apartment management profession. NJAA enables its members to share experiences and advance their interests.
NJAA's membership's interests are served on a national level through its affiliation with the National Apartment Association (NAA).
In 1986 the Multi-Housing Council of the New Jersey Builder’s Association (NJBA) formed a stand-alone association to better serve New Jersey apartment owners. NJAA was formerly known as the New Jersey Council of the Multi Housing Industry (MHI). The MHI’s presence and testimony helped to establish the association in Trenton, in the news and in the real estate community.
In December of 1992 MHI changed its name to the New Jersey Apartment Association (NJAA) to signify and celebrate the association’s efforts and success at uniting and advancing New Jersey’s Apartment industry. Our founders were trailblazers, as are the NJAA members today who represent apartment owners throughout the state.
