Governor Christie Signs Legislation Directing State Agencies to Review Ways to Expedite Permitting
August 17, 2015
On Monday, Governor Christie signed into law S-1813/A-1813, which is sponsored by Senator Jim Whelan (D-Atlantic), Senator Steve Oroho (R-Sussex), Assemblyman John Burzichelli (D-Cumberland) as well as additional Assembly sponsors and co-sponsors. The bill expands and strengthens the provisions of a 2011 law that requires each State agency to undertake a periodic review of permits issued by these agencies, in order to identify permits that are obsolete or that could be administered through an expedited procedure. The bill will require State agency reviews to identify: 1) permits that can have their period of validity extended beyond the scheduled termination date without significant disruption to the efficiency or work of the State agency, so long as the public health, safety, or general welfare is not endangered; and 2) permitting procedures that can be better facilitated through the increased incorporation of computer-based technology, such as the Internet, or that can be completed online.
